THROUGH the penthouse windows, New York City, foggy and soft-looking, was spread out in every direction. Jesus Luz, best known as the 22-year-old Brazilian model who is dating Madonna, was about to step up to the D.J. station in a club atop a Lower East Side hotel.

Young models in sheer cocktail dresses shimmied near chrome buckets holding bottles of the vodka brand sponsoring the party.

A freelance reporter for Life & Style magazine prepared to sidle up for a quick interview. “I’m here because I’m supposed to ask him questions about dating Madonna,” she said.

Asked if she knew how to say Mr. Luz’s first name, she ventured, “Hay-soos? Or maybe Gee-zus?”

Life has changed so fast for Mr. Luz, it is not surprising that not everyone in his orbit knows how to pronounce Jesus in the proper Portuguese way. Matt Levine, a club owner who had organized the party and refers to Mr. Luz as a friend, was going with “Hay-soos.” Josh Holland, who has been his personal trainer for several months, after the two met through a Madonna connection, was snapping photos and calling him “J.”

A year ago, Mr. Luz was earning about $500 a day as a model in Rio de Janeiro, said Sérgio Mattos, his agent at the time. Then in December 2008 he landed a shoot with Madonna for W magazine in which the two played lovers in a Rio hotel.

“At the moment he met Madonna, I never see him after that,” said Mr. Mattos in a telephone interview. “I sent him to the job and after that he changed phone numbers and I never see him again.”

The months since have been a study in ascension. Mr. Luz signed with Ford Models in New York, escorted Madonna to the Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute Ball in the spring and appeared on the runway for Dolce & Gabbana in Milan.

He enrolled at a D.J. school in Manhattan and in no time has landed high-profile gigs. For the 90-minute set he was spinning Nov. 12, only his second professional D.J. outing in the city, he was being paid around $15,000, said Matthew Isaacs, a promoter who had booked him, at a lower cost, to spin two nights later at Hiro in the meatpacking district.

My Mother’s Famous Stuffing
by Daytona Bitch, Drag Idol 2008 winner and all around fabulous bitch

Ingredients:
¼ cup of white bread pieces
¼ cup of whole wheat bread pieces
¾ teaspoon of sage
¾ teaspoon of poultry seasoning
¾ teaspoon of thyme
2 ½ celery stalks
4 green onions, chopped small
1 onion, chopped small
1 egg
¾ cup fresh chopped parsley

Directions:
In a frying pan melt ¼ cup of butter. Add celery, green onions and your onion and cook for 5 to 7 minutes. Add ¾ teaspoon of sage, poultry seasoning, thyme. Cut the crust off the bread and tear into small pieces, about the size of a dime bag of weed, and put it in a bowl. Add the hot butter and veggies to the bread along with an egg and, most importantly, ¾ cup of fresh chopped parsley. Mix it, stuff it in your bird and it’ll be done when your bird’s nice and brown.

Tips:
If your turkey is small, cut down on the size of your measurements to make it fit. When you are mixing this stuffing together, use the biggest pot or bowl you can and use your hands to mix it all up. Stuffing can be cooked inside the turkey or cooked in foil for about an hour. If you are putting it deep inside your bird, remember to clean and salt the inside. Also, drink while doing all of this because it’s Christmas bitch.

BEIJING, Nov 30 (Reuters Life!) – A Chinese city with one of the nation’s highest rates of AIDS has opened a government-funded gay bar in an outreach effort that has stirred debate over the use of taxpayers’ money.

The health department in Dali, a picturesque city on a lake in southwestern Yunnan province, funded the bar to reach out to China’s increasingly open gay community. Dali is one of the 10 cities in China most affected by AIDS.

Same-sex transmission accounts for about one-third of new HIV infections in China, the minister of health said this month.

“Some readers think that it’s a waste of taxpayer money, or an indirect endorsement of homosexual behaviour,” the Beijing News said in an opinion piece on Monday, citing letters to the editor after it ran an article on the bar over the weekend.

“They think if there were another way to reach out to the gay community, it wouldn’t be necessary to open a bar.”

Founder Zhang Jianbo hopes that the bar will be a public gathering place for gay men, especially from rural villages, who used to gather in a patch of woods near the historic town.

The bar offers sex education and free condoms, in addition to companionship, Zhang said in an interview with the newspaper. Read the rest of this entry »

Late Thursday, in the House of Commons, during question period, both the NDP and the Conservative Party strongly denounced Uganda’s pending anti-gay legislation that would make homosexuality a crime.

Ottawa — During question period in the House of Commons on Thursday, Bill Siksay, MP (Burnaby-Douglas) and NDP Critic for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transsexual and Transgender Issues stood up and called on the government to stand up and speak out against Uganda’s anti-gay bill.

“Mr. Speaker, The Ugandan Anti-Homosexuality Bill is reprehensible vile, and hateful. It violates human rights by imposing life imprisonment on gays and lesbians and a death sentence on those who are gay and have AIDS. It will jail anyone who fails to report anyone they know to be gay,” Mr. Siksay stated.

“At the Commonwealth meeting, will the Prime Minister meet face to face with Uganda’s prime minister to help stop this bill, and will he make gay, lesbian and trans rights essential to the development and educational work supported by Canadian foreign aid to Uganda and elsewhere?” Mr. Siksay asked in conclusion.

John Baird, the Minister of Transport spoke for Prime Minister Harper because the Prime Minister wasn’t in the House as he was preparing to depart for the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting being held over the weekend.

Mr. Baird replied, “The current legislation before Parliament in Uganda is vile, it’s abhorrent, it’s offensive. It offends Canadian values. It offends decency Mr. Speaker. We strongly condemn that and the Prime Minister will make that strong condemnation as well.”

Both MP’s speeches were well received all around in the House, more so than a few of the other questions that had been posed during this question period.

Earlier in the week, Mr. Siksay had written to Prime Minister Harper on this issue; in it he wrote:

“I am writing to request that you take a strong public position in opposition to legislation now being considered in Uganda that constitutes a major affront the human rights of gay and lesbian people and a significant setback to AID/HIV policy. The Anti-Homosexuality Bill is a very serious attack on the lives of sexual minorities and those living with AIDS/HIV, and it is draconian in every respect.

I would urge that you and your officials lead efforts at the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting on this issue in the hope that the meeting takes a strong stand in opposition to this legislation and has in place a plan of action should it proceed. I would also request that you make Canada’s position known directly to Uganda’s representatives at the meeting.”

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, takes place from November 27 to 29 and is slated to be chaired by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.

The news from the House of Commons is an encouraging and welcome development that strengthens the previous statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office earlier in the week and indicates that perhaps it won’t be business as usual with Uganda and the Commonwealth.

It wasn’t really the man-on-man kiss or the simulated oral sex that marked Adam Lambert’s performance on the American Music Awards on Sunday as shocking. Mostly it was ABC’s reaction. By rescinding Mr. Lambert’s invitation to sing on “Good Morning America,” ABC self-protectively drew a line that networks usually prefer to keep blurred.

Or as Mr. Lambert said Wednesday morning on “The Early Show” on CBS, “There’s a lot of very adult material on the A.M.A.’s this year, and I know I wasn’t the only one.” Mr. Lambert, runner-up on this year’s “American Idol,” was referring to other risqué performances Sunday night, including Lady Gaga smashing whiskey bottles, Janet Jackson grabbing a male dancer’s crotch and Eminem talking about his character Slim Shady’s rap sheet of rape, assault and murder.

There is a lot of very adult material on television all the time, and mostly it flows unchecked and unpunished, except when it comes as a surprise and hits a nerve. Community standards are mutable and vague; lots of people don’t know obscenity until someone else sees it. Ms. Jackson transgressed during the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show because she exposed a nipple, which is one thing that network television normally doesn’t show. Mr. Lambert, who just released his first album, startled viewers because he did things akin to what outré rappers and female pop stars have performed onstage to get attention, only he did it as a gay man.
