Web site based in Toronto says they tried to buy expensive air time for the big game

A Toronto-based dating service for gay men is trying to buy air time for a 30 second commercial during the Super Bowl.

ManCrunch.com is a new dating service that decided to launch its advertising campaign with a real bang, said Dominic Friesen, a spokesperson for the site.

The company was looking around for a big kickoff campaign for this month, he explained. And nothing’s bigger than the Super Bowl when it comes to television events in January, he said. So they decided to take a crack at buying an ad. “We thought 90 million men watch the Super Bowl and we target men,” Friesen said in a telephone interview with the Star. “Why don’t we get the most bang for our buck?” he said.

The advertisement, which can be watched on the dating site’s Web page and YouTube, shows two men watching a game on television and cheering. Then, as they both reach for a bowl of potato chips at the same time, their hands meet. After a looking into each other’s eyes, the two embrace enthusiastically and kiss passionately. The ad with a third fan looking very surprised by what has developed.

The Web site is targeted at North American men of all ages and was just launched this month. A commercial on the Super Bowl was part of the site’s advertising strategy, Friesen said. A 30 second commercial airing on CBS during the football game would cost the site $3 million, he said, adding the site was prepared to pay the price and it would be well worth the money.

”Three million dollars for a 30 second commercial and 90 million viewers,” Friesen said. “It’s simply dollars and cents for us.”

According to FoxNews.com, CBS told the dating site that “the spot hadn’t been officially approved yet” by network standards and that “all Super Bowl spots were sold out.”

Friesen confirms that is indeed the case. It has been two weeks since the ad was submitted and the Web site was originally told there wasn’t any ad space available. “We countered with there might be some fallout. We asked them to approve it just in case.”

Friesen said as of Thursday morning they have been told there is still was no space available for TV ads during the big game. But Friesen isn’t buying it. He believes there is indeed ad space, and the television giant is engaging in “a pure form of discrimination.”

Now the dating site will head back to the boardroom to come up with another advertising strategy. “We thought we were going to do a big launch at the Super Bowl and build through that. Now there are a lot of other considerations going on.”

When asked whether they might try to advertise during the Olympics or perhaps in the Stanley Cup finals, Friesen wouldn’t say.

A CBS representative has said, according to FoxNews.com, that the ad is still under review and the process of approval takes a while.

The ManCrunch.com ad controversy comes on the heels of another commercial slated for the Super Bowl that has raised eyebrows for another reason. CBS has approved a pro-life commercial with Florida quarterback Tim Tebow. The commercial, funded by a Christian conservative group, is to be aired during the game.

More gay couples are having kids

Posted by: admin In: Gay Culture & LGBT

"Starting in 1999, the pension laws have applied to same-sex couples, and then there was the legalization of gay marriage. As a result, the number of homoparental families increases every year." (Shutterstock.com)

MONTREAL – Six years after gay marriage was legalized in Quebec, there is a marked increase in the number of same-sex couples who have decided to have children. In Quebec, some 1400 children have two dads or two moms.

According to data obtained from the Régie des rentes du Québec (RRQ), at the end of 2008 there were 1386 children living in “homoprental” families, a number that has been increasing steadily since 2001. Back then, only 201 children were living with a same-sex couple as their parents.

Of that number, nearly 80% of the 950 known homoparental families in 2008 were composed of two moms, and just under 200 were composed of two dads.

According to the governmental agency, this increase is directly ascribable to the equal rights same-sex couples have gained in the past ten or so years.

“It follows the legislation,” commented the RRQ spokesperson, Herman Huot. “Starting in 1999, the pension laws have applied to same-sex couples, and then there was the legalization of gay marriage. As a result, the number of homoparental families increases every year.”

A NIGHTCLUB where police uncovered a mass orgy has used a legal loophole to stay open.

Glasgow’s Arches venue was ordered to close for six weeks as punishment after shocked cops found some 30 men in sexual clinches at a gay night.

Some of them mistook two uniformed coppers for strippers – and carried on regardless.

The venue, part funded by public cash, feared a cash crisis and battled the suspension.

But despite losing TWO appeals at the sheriff court and the Court of Session, the club will stay open – because Scotland’s old licensing laws were abolished in September.

The loophole has saved a string of venues, including the Honours Three pub in Glasgow’s south side, where a barman was charged with attempted murder after a mass brawl.

Glasgow lap-dancing clubs Spearmint Rhino and Seventh Heaven – where dancers went too far with customers – also escaped punishment.

An insider said: “It’s fair to say the Arches were advised that if they dragged out the appeal, they would never have to serve it. They’ve got off scot-free.”

Police licensing head Chief Inspector Stuart Neill said: “Unfortunately, the transition between Acts did not allow for suspensions to be carried over.”

The club refused to comment.

When porn director Chi Chi LaRue spoke out last week for the health of actors in porn videos, some gay men were blunt: who cares about the health of the actors when it gets in the way of my entertainment? Then there are the nasty internet gossip mongers at Gawker, Defamer, and Perez Hilton…who all seem to be gay men. This got Two Gay Guys (aka Brent and Michael) thinking: what makes some gay men so damn mean?

Odd, right? – A gay guy’s experience

Posted by: admin In: Stories Gay

Something odd is happening:

3 years or more ago – guy is interested, I’m interested – chat, chat, chat – finally ask him to meet and he says he’s dating someone and they’re moving in together….

Fine

About a year ago – same guy chats it up – we should meet, etc.  A week or so after the date he tells me that he met someone….

Now: Wants to do something again…

Should I?

Just throwing this question into the cosmos…..

*sighs*
