Facebook has re-evaluated its decision to censor a Calgary trans man’s post-op chest pics. A spokesperson told Xtra late Friday that Dominic Scaia is free to reupload the pictures, citing the importance of raising awareness about trans issues.

In a partial victory yesterday, Facebook reinstated Scaia’s account after he was banned on Dec 20, but the site warned Scaia not to reupload his post-op chest pics because they violated the terms of service for containing “nudity or other graphic or sexually suggestive content.”

(Boston)Feminist theologian and author Mary Daly, who retired from a professorship at Boston College rather than allow men to take her classes, has died.

College spokesman Jack Dunn confirmed Wednesday that Daly died Sunday at a Massachusetts nursing home. She was 81. He says she had been ill for some time.

According to the GLBTQ encyclopedia of the social sciences:

“An outspoken lesbian-feminist and separatist, Daly provoked outrage by challenging established ideas and institutions that she considered destructive to women’s power and creativity.

“From organized religion to the university world she calls “academentia,” to men themselves, Daly dissected the “death-loving” culture of patriarchy and its effects on the minds and hearts of women. However, her brilliant body of work was far more than a litany of complaints. School district failed to stop harassment, federal government says

The U.S. Justice Department intervention in the civil case of a former Mohawk Central School District student could lead to a broader interpretation of a federal law that prohibits gender discrimination by applying it to the harassment of a gay male, an attorney in the case said Friday night.

The 14-year-old openly gay student, Jacob, who once attended Gregory B. Jarvis Junior/Senior High School, alleges the district failed to stop other students and a teacher from bullying him because of his sexual orientation.

The federal involvement represents a significant shift for the Justice Department under the Obama administration, the New York Civil Liberties Union lawyer said.

The government cites Title IX of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which was passed to prevent gender discrimination, as the basis for joining the lawsuit filed last summer in U.S. District Court in the Northern District of New York.

The teenager’s lawyers Friday night cast the case as a fight for basic human rights.

“This is a very significant development and great news for the children who go to school in the Mohawk district,” said Donna Lieberman, the executive director of the NYCLU, which filed the suit on Jacob’s behalf.

One of the duties of being a politician is meeting and greeting with different people, groups and organizations in your political territory, and recently Mayor Dan Rogers met with another group of young people in this city.
Say what you will about Mayor Rogers’ fiscal policies while running the city, but he has shown in the past (marching in the PRIDE parade) and in the story we ran in this paper on Jan. 8 that he is not afraid too buck the trend.
Meeting recently with a group of teens at the school district’s Gay-Straight Alliance youth group, Rogers said, “It gives the kids a nice opportunity to learn a bit about municipal government, and ask questions. It’s quite cool,” he said.
But for some reason, there are people in this city who seem to think that being gay, transgendered, bisexual, a cross-dresser or even meeting with someone who is, is some form of disease.
We have several letters to the editor on this page today stating their utter disgust that the mayor would meet with this young group of people. One even says she believed mayor Rogers to be a family man, seeming to imply that he is no longer a family man because he met with the Gay-Straight Alliance

Steven Zhang took three days to make the decision to participate in China’s first-ever Mr Gay Pageant to be held this evening in Beijing, with his hesitation coming from worries over what would happen when he was “outed” by the event.

Gay pageant contestants want acceptance, not hype

He did not expect the huge media attention both from home and abroad before the event.

The 30-year-old Liaoning native, who broke up with his boyfriend months ago, is now worried that the media exposure, particularly within the nation, would lead to unwanted consequences like losing his job or hurting his family’s feelings, due to the social stigma and discrimination against homosexuals.

“I’m mentally prepared to get over it but not sure how long it would take. Well, so far I have no regret,” he told China Daily yesterday, a day before the pageant featuring eight contestants from the mainland.

However, he conceded that he made the decision on impulse, despite the goodwill objections from friends citing widespread discrimination against homosexuals in the country with a 5,000-year tradition that values reproduction.

The event, masterminded by Gayographic, a gay public relations and event management company, will feature three rounds, including freestyle, fashion show, and Q&A session, according to Zhang Liang, also 30, an overseas returnee now working in the finance industry in Beijing and director of Gayographic.
